City of Ursidea by Built4ever City of Ursidea by Built4ever
A concept design/illustration and commission for a series of novels. Website flurrythebear.com/pages/home/1 here. We imagined this city as a beautiful peaceful place, unfortified, and built into a lush gentle valley between mountain ranges. Inhabitants put special emphasis on beautiful architecture, which I based on classical, Asian, fantasy, and perhaps the domes of Hagia Sofia, which show up in many fantasy settings. We wanted the city to be rather flat, with an emphasis on the horizontal. The city will be buried at a future time! So unlike many of my typical castles and villages, this one spreads out horizontally, blending into gardens, orchards, light forest, and more. This is part of an ongoing series for Jonathan Skye, and we plan on doing some more locations.

What a beautiful design!

I love the idea of a fantasy village having a central, domed structure that is a library or opera house instead of an open fighting pit or poncy lord's palace.

It's sad to think it gets buried, but at the same time it greatly appeals to the archaeologist in me.

Ah the joy! Bury it, then dig it up again! Now it's an antiquity. Yes, the central structure could be anything. I like peaceful civilized purposes too...

I doubt it. I thought about semi-colored though, maybe terracotta roofs on tan paper background.

Not building a new house at the moment.  I'm working on furnishing the interior of my current one right now.  Had to take a break for holiday expenses and then I'll get back at it.  I really enjoy working with miniature baseboards, trim, moulding, etc.  It's a lot of fun.  Hope you had a great holiday!

Real crown mold and trim can be a pain in the rear, especially when the house is not "true." Corners aren't perfect 90 degree angles, drywall is not straight, etc. I wonder if YOUR house is "true" he he...

lol  You asked if my house was "true" or not.... well, in miniatures even 1/16th of an inch can really show.  So... yes, my house is fairly true, with the exception of the ceilings where I had some sag and slant problems.  But the corners of rooms were put in place using a triangle so they turned out pretty good.  *griins*

'zactly, just like building a real one, if the room is out of square, your trim will not be pleasant to attach. Believe me, even new ones can be "out" by a tiny bit.

Wow!!! This is super epic.  Love the amount of detail. How long did the drawing take to make? I like the possibility of exploring this concept much closer.
