Porch Rebuild Project

Description

Originally, the end of this porch had no overhang and was leaking water into the structure due to poor detailing and bad design, rotting out boards, rafters, etc. Last year I built an overhang, shown in the first picture, which I covered temporarily with vinyl pieces until the second rebuild last month, when I tore off the vinyl. I designed and built an overhang which included 2x6's notched internally into several rafters for structural strength as well as two decorative brackets, heavily built and anchored, to support the fascia board. Additional details included using T&G (tongue and groove) boards for the exposed eaves, 1x6 pine trim boards, an angled trim piece along the top of the beam to shed water, and Hardiboard concrete/fiber siding. Structure is a 2x4 frame mounted with screws and sheathed with half inch real plywood, not commonly used OSB. I also designed and built the gate and the 44 inch dog-proof rail to replace the rickety six foot wide gate shown in the first photo. Finish includes two coats of sanding sealer and two coats of white primer before mounting, and two coats of white semi-gloss. I have one final trim board to install at left side where the new meets the old for a smooth transition from the old vinyl siding to the new materials. Gate functions beautifully, which I use many times a day now, and overhang sheds rain very effectively into the extended gutter. No more leaks and porch is much more beautiful now!

A lot of people tend to get inappropriately excited when seeing Hollywood actors looking really cute, but right now I am getting inappropriately excited over seeing a work in progress (kinda) porch! :D

And I really need to find out what kind of paint you use and most importantly HOW you people paint wood to look so... "clean" out there.

p.s. Do tell me you got to pet the dog
