Proposed Renovations to Three Small Houses by Built4ever Proposed Renovations to Three Small Houses by Built4ever
This is a small but interesting project for a client in Jasper, Texas, wishing to renovate some historic homes in the city center. The home at the top is being scouted for possible sale, and the other two are already owned by the members of the extended family. Client has a keen interest in this small historic town in the flat "piney woods" area of Eastern Texas, close to Louisiana. I had the go ahead to re-design them any way I chose.

Technique: each sketch is a pencil study measuring roughly 8 inches across by maybe 5 inches high. I use several photos as reference to draw an outline of the home. I don't follow the photos exactly. As usual, sketches are entirely hand-drawn. Photos were supplied by the client.

I'm fixing up a small, old, home right now (same date range) and these are so inspiring. We're almost finished on the inside but don't have the money to get to the outside, (it will be a few years, because I want to have enough money to do it right) but these give me hope! (It looks like a box right now. & I'm hoping the town's historical society has some pictures of it. I want to try to keep the original feel, even though there's been an add-on so I know I'll be taking some liberties anyway.) Your art is amazing. I'm more of a lurker than a commentor but I've pretty much gone through your whole gallery and your art is just so amazing! -Thanks for posting so much great stuff!

Wow! That's some pretty amazing transformations. You'll have to post pictures if they ever go through with the renovations.

Wow!  Wonderful designs.  Those renovations will turn three "plain vanilla" houses into homes with great character and appeal.  Totally cool!

Amazing sketches. I like how your renovations not only keep the integrity of the buildings, but enhance them in a way that keeps to the style of the period. I don't know when exactly these homes were made but it seems some of these are missing key aspects that would make them much more efficient as homes. You did a good job of introducing them.

Yes, they were built around 1915 to 1930 or so. They were built "plain" from prevailing and current national architectural trends.

What you proposed isn't proportional to the existing homes so I can't see how they would be done without major rebuilding of roofs and such.  This wouldn't be a problem except the word historic is used which implys something not to be changed.

Yes, I took liberties, not exactly perfect, but still, a concept sketch presents a lot of new ideas, creates emotion and excitement, and gives us a range of possibles and not possibles. I'm not interested in "pure" historic accuracy. Many historic homes are marginal or even badly designed. I feel fine IMPROVING what is historic and bringing it up to a higher level. I don't agree that calling something "historic" implies that it shouldn't be changed. All buildings change over time! Even if the architect doesn't like it he he...

You remind me of the movie director who in the making of "Charge of the Light Brigade" thought the British troops would look better in blue coats and told anyone who protested that they could make their own damned historical film.

Red! Blue! WHATEVER. They're just pretty jackets for pretty toy soldiers. Red does hide the blood stains better though.
