Some Unusual Cottage Style Homes by Built4ever Some Unusual Cottage Style Homes by Built4ever
A compilation of various watercolor sketches from my sketchbook circa maybe 10 years ago, done around scale 1/16" = one foot, with watercolors, brown ink pen, and pencil. I had to scale a few up and a few down to get them to work together at the right scale. Though colored, they are only lightly shadowed as if it were a cloudy day. Some of these have become inspirations for real home designs in my sketch binders, with minor corrections to window arrangements and other details. Primary influence is English vernacular building traditions, but with a touch of whimsy, just bordering on storybook style.

Note: File changed out 4-14-2015. New file has landscape/plants/flowers, houses that were unfinished are done, and house #12 was completely changed out.

Not sure what the 'before' looked like, but it looks marvelous now.

Not much different really, this is just icing on the cake stuff. Getting all my "top" pieces up to snuff. This one was surprisingly popular. Also did a print page version (portrait format page) for a possible book. That's on my computer for now.

Left field.
Have you considered being a set illustrator for films? There's always the possibility they won't want storybook cottages, but then again, maybe they would?

Working as concept designer/set designer yes, I'm already on the verge of it really, with the last 3 months work (none of it able to be shown here...)

Is #1 based more on Jacobite town houses? My tenuous guess is based on a lack of half-timbering.

I kinda made it up I think. The other two next to it are definitely influenced by some pics of small English townhouses with really bold half-timbering.

As a designer, I am inspired by traditional styles and can't thank you enough for sharing this. The drawings are pretty neat as well.

Well, being in the UK, you're surrounded by lots of good stuff. The best is all around you, built over the centuries. The old builders were the masters. Just keep learning about the old secrets.

These are wonderful!  Your houses are so inspiring.  I look at them and then try to imagine what setting they would be in - a forest, a manicured garden... etc.  They're brain candy.  lol

Would you mind terribly if I made some paper models out of a few of your designs here?

Very inspirational.

It's weird--after looking at these for about five minutes, my least favorite one (#16) became my MOST favorite. It just is so unique. Although 18 it totally cute, too. Love 'em, Francois!! Thanks for sharing!

That happens with music too. It grows on you and then it becomes your favorite. It's like acquiring the taste of a fine wine.
