Steampunk Inventor by Built4ever Steampunk Inventor by Built4ever
A small watercolor study of one my steampunk sketches, about 6" by 10" tall, original drawing done from a photo I took at the Dragon Con convention in Atlanta about 2 yrs ago. I modified her just a bit, including adding a wrench and a tool pouch for repairing complicated machinery that we regular people just don't understand. I changed the colors of the outfit substantially.

Note: File updated 12-1-2015, added steam engine line drawing in background. I'm thinking about doing a small self-published book/anthology of my steam punk drawings. This might end up being the cover shot.

Well now! This is lovely work. It fits right in with how we ladies feel about working in our shop. ( theatre scenery lab) The steampunk is where most of us are at these days. It is interesting how your artwork here has touched so many of us. Pride in her stance or something... Love it!

Thanks for kind words. Yes, you know, sometimes I draw "from scratch" and sometimes with a photo reference, which this had, and she was originally holding an implement of destruction (a gun!) but I changed it to an implement of CONstruction and re-arranged her role as a mad inventor of sorts. Good excuse to learn how to doodle a steam engine. I saw that latest theater set you did and the fog generator. I need a fog generator in my studio for late night Youboobtube music video sessions. (New wave! Metal! Punk! Prog/Experimental! Americana!) Where was that set at?

Hi Built4ever. The set for Blithe Spirit was built at Oklahoma State University Theatre Department, We used two foggers, in fact. One for the fireplace smoke, and one for the ghost's entrance. There are so many ways to make fog, but in academic theatre we've gone to commercial machines rather than the old hot water and dry ice. The old way, however is my favourite.

Have you played with Sketchup or 3D models yet for set design?

I used sketchup for a quick design whilst I was working in South Africa as did not have access to AutoCAD.  I thought it was clunky. After AutoCAD, most everything is clunky I think. I did not use sketchup pro, so maybe that's the difference.  My problem with AutoCAD 3D is I am learning how to really use it. I can loft things, but goodness, being exact in 3D is amazingly precise and sometimes annoying.  The computer power it takes... Sheesh!

Here's the funny thing sir: That is actually a slightly modified portrait of a young lady at the Dragon-Con convention in downtown ATL, about 2 yrs ago. At that particular one, they assembled about 500 Steampunk people into a big room at one of the hotels. There were dozens more wandering around. I'm sure there was a mermaid in there somewhere. Attendance is like 50,000 or more now? Huge...

As I said before, itīs really nice to have something different with such quality among your pieces. Like thereīs no comfort zone for you XD I mean, you surely worked hard to reach the level you are in today, and itīs nice to see some other fruits from that hard work (itīs correct to say that in english? I donīt really know if you will understand that...)
Comgrats and itīs always a pleasure ^-^

Fruits of labor is right. And I LIKE TASTY FRUIT. Years of practice to get to a certain labor, but you always want to exceed previous work...
